“Precognitive, or? ”

Predicting future events – either personal or global – through dreamwork requires practice and skill. Interpreting symbolic imagery and timelines can be challenging business, but processing them is worth the effort.

For example, one woman reports the following dream in which all elements are vividly real and they resonate with her for several days afterward:

I am walking between two monks in brown medieval robes; one has red hair, the other is blonde. We come to the edge of a precipice and we stand there looking out into vast endless space, then turn and look into each of their faces neither of which I recognize in waking life, but I feel love for them both. I know I have to choose one as a partner, and choose the blonde man. I feel as if we will be together forever. ~M.W.

The dreamer revealed that she was in a troubled marriage and lacked the courage to end it. She further stated that she was Catholic and was conflicted, yet comforted by her dream.

Is this a precognitive or wish fulfillment dream? Of course the first step is to document the dream in a journal with time and date and place it in context of present life circumstances. Then, break down the elements.

The dreamer is supported by two medieval monks, i.e., who could represent her religious beliefs that may be outdated (dream pun). OR, it may be two men she might meet in the future. They are, after all, standing on the edge of a precipice, a vast unknown, which indicates the possibility of such in an endless space surrounding them. It appears a tenuous scene, until the dreamer makes the decision to choose one of the men as her partner.

The conflict comes from the fact the woman is not really free in the waking world to choose a new partner – as she is married at the time of the dream. Plus, the men she ‘loves’ are monks who do not marry; thus, an accurate picture of her current situation emerges from the dream.

However, if the dreamer chooses to leave her situation so that she will be free to embrace the possibilities in the vast space before her, as the dream suggests, only in time could this dream be proven precognitive. It would be important to note, as well, that the number two might be key in retrospect. Did she (or will she) meet her “dream man” in two days, two weeks, two months, two years?

Don’t overlook the obvious details our dreams contain, as every element is a clue from the psyche. And by journaling the dreamer will be able to refer back to the time of the dream and determine whether it was a prediction of her future life or a message to choose change and embrace the unknown. Perhaps it will be both.
